A Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance can enhance your Medicare coverage by helping to pay some of the health cost that the Original Medicare does not cover, like copayments, yearly deductibles and coinsurance. While original Medicare (Parts A and B) pays for many of your health care services and supplies, it doesn't pay for everything. Some Medicare supplement policies offer coverage for services that Original Medicare does not cover at all.
Medicare supplement insurance is sold by private companies. It is regulated by Medicare. To qualify for Medicare supplement insurance, you must have Medicare Part A and Part B. Currently, there are 10 standardized Medigap plans and one high deductible plan, each represented by a letter (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N, and high deductible F). Not all types of Medigap policies may be available in your state.
